The armor overlays crash in the 1.8.9 version

As soon as I go into a world with the armor overlay in version 1.8.9 or I join a server, I get an error message saying that the overlays could not be loaded. When I'm on a server or in a world and try to activate the overlays in the Wiget Editor I get the same error.
